Seat - Forms and Textiles
Date
Fall 2023
"Red Pillow," affectionately named after Sam's childhood stuffed animal Blue Pillow, was created for Sam's Forms and Textiles class. This project utilized red and pink upholstery fabric, white leather, plywood, foam, Dacron, and Poly-fil to form a 30" x 30" x 15" seat.
Sam sought to create an "adult" version of the stuffed companions of his childhood through his seat. Using bold colors and soft inviting forms, Sam aims to make this project inviting, comfortable, and playful. The entire structure of the seat is covered in at least one layer of Dacron to ensure a comfortable feel and a "stuffed" visual.
Additionally, Sam was inspired by the specific act of children dragging their stuffed animals across the ground. To echo this concept in the project, Red Pillow's back doubles as a handle to drag the seat across the floor, with the felt-bottomed legs peacefully dragging along with the rest of the form like a child's stuffed bear.
The internal structure of the seat is made of plywood, coated in foam attached with adhesive spray, and contained within a sewn cover stapled to the frame.
