Table Lamp - Product Design

Date

Fall 2023

"Q" was made for Sam's product design table lamp assignment. The prompt called for a table lamp that was under 12" x 12" x 12", housed an LED light in such a way that it would not be a fire hazard, and hid the light from the audience. The lamp was to be made from a repeated object in 3DSMax, which Sam chose to be a torus.

Combining the inspiration of fire and an animal skull, Sam attempted to make a lamp that had fiery "eyes" made through the rings on the sides of the lamp. These rings all have different levels of light reflected upon them, getting dimmer the further from the center of the lamp. These rings also serve as a way to hide the light in the lamp, as they are offset from each other just enough to block the source. The top of the lamp resembles the dance of a flame, with the tops of the distorted tori swaying in unison across the piece.

When starting the assignment, Sam wanted to be conscious of the shadows the lamp cast. Through using rings, he was able to control the shadows in such a way that the lamp casts reflections as lines across the ceiling and walls around the lamp.
